Ubatuba Islands
In Ubatuba, in addition to the wonderful coast, it is possible to find beautiful tropical islands, which are worth visiting. The islands can be reached by boats organized by locals, at affordable prices.
The most visited islands of the Ubatuba archipelago that can receive tourists are:
Couves Island, Anchieta Island, Prumirim Island, Maranduba Island,
Almada Island also known as Pig Island.
In addition to the main islands, the Ubatuba Archipelago has some small islands, which do not have infrastructure.
Anchieta Island
Anyone willing to go for a walk can take trails around the island, but you have to be careful, the island is full of snakes. Among the trails, the Prainha do Engenho (530 meters) stands out, which connects Presídio beach - one of the main ones - to Engenho beach, where large rocks form a natural pool. Another option is the path that leads to Praia das Palmas, with clear, calm waters and fine sand, ideal for those who cannot swim or have children. During the tour, the visitor can enjoy the view of the island's shores, from where it is possible to see turtles swimming. There are also the Underwater trails (350 meters), which lead to the Rocky Coast, where marine organisms such as starfish, brain coral, different types of algae, anemones, polychaetes and fish inhabit; and the Dam (750 meters), which passes through the Machine House and the Passado e Presente viewpoint and ends at the dam that stores the water produced by the forest.
Other attractions in the park are diving, visits to the barracks and the old prison. Currently, the renovated front of the prison houses the park administration, exhibition room, auditorium, clinic and public toilet. The cells were built to form a rectangular courtyard and it was in this courtyard that the prisoners gathered, surrounded by the cells where more than 450 prisoners were confined, all of which were highly dangerous. Today, they are in ruins and have restricted access, but there is already a recovery project for the implementation of cultural and educational activities.
Anchieta Island has a great diversity of marine fauna
Today, it has an overpopulation of capybaras, capuchin monkeys, skunks, lizards, armadillos and agoutis. Scientific surveys found the presence of only 72 species of birds, including: sabiá, juriti, tangará, tiê-¬sangue, colerinha, saira, bem-te-vi, booby, seagull and hummingbird. Some species must have become extinct due to wood cutting, burning, hunting and, recently, the predation of nests by exotic species, such as coatis and marmosets.
Anchieta Island submerged statue of Yves Cousteu.
A life-size statue was placed by the Association of Diving Operators on November 15, 1997, as a way of honoring French diver and scientist Jacques Cousteau. “On the occasion, more than 200 divers were gathered in an attempt to break the simultaneous diving record. This place ended up becoming an attraction, consolidating an important point for diving”, explained Orabona.
The statue is located on the sand, 9 meters deep, close to the rocky shore of Praia do Leste on Anchieta Island, a point that adds a great diversity of marine life.
Who was Jacques-Yves Cousteau?
On June 25, 1997, the French oceanographer, explorer, conservationist, documentarian and filmmaker Jacques-Yves Cousteau died. Also known as Captain Cousteau, he was a pioneer in the fight for marine conservation and was passionate about the seas.
